The phrase HODL was not initially an acronym and was a simple spelling mistake by a user on the Bitcointalk forum. An early online Bitcoin investor had posted to "HODL BITCOIN" as the token was extremely volatile in 2013 and the price had surged over $950 which was a 30% increase from its price in the previous year.

As the years passed, the term had gained popularity among crypto enthusiasts, and eventually gained the meaning 'Hold on for dear life". Although this isn't the initial definition of the term, this version does a good job of capturing the essence of the words meaning.
